Making Family Fun More Accessible

At Out of Bounds, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy active fun with their family and friends.

For some children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), visiting a busy activity centre can bring additional challenges. Bright lights, loud music, crowds, unfamiliar surroundings and the pressure to take part in a particular activity can make a family day out difficult.

That’s why our SEND Events are designed to create a more relaxed, flexible and supportive experience — helping more families enjoy the activities they love, in an environment that works for them.

A quieter way to enjoy Out of Bounds

One of the most important things we hear from families is how much difference a calmer environment can make.

A recent family shared their experience of attending our SEND Events with their child, who experiences significant sensory processing challenges. They explained that busy and noisy environments can quickly become overwhelming, limiting the amount of time their family can spend enjoying activities together.

Our SEND Events provide a different experience.

During these sessions, we make changes around the centre to support a range of sensory, communication and mobility needs. There is no flashing lighting, sound is greatly reduced and there is no loud music. We also provide quieter and breakout spaces where families can take some time away from the main activity areas if needed.

And importantly, there is no pressure to do everything.

Families can choose which activities they want to try, take breaks, step away and return when they are ready. Activities can be used flexibly, allowing each person to enjoy their visit at their own pace.

Creating opportunities that might otherwise be difficult

For the family who shared their feedback, this flexibility has made activities such as Clip ’N Climb and Adventure Nets possible.

Their child loves climbing but can find things like wearing a harness, clothing, shoes and having their hair tied up extremely challenging. In a typical busy environment, these difficulties could mean that taking part simply isn't possible.

During a SEND Event, however, the calmer surroundings can make a huge difference.

Being able to put on a harness without a large crowd watching, and then move straight into the activity, can help remove some of the additional pressure. Instead of focusing on what might be difficult, the family can focus on what their child enjoys.

That's exactly what we want our SEND Events to provide: opportunities to participate without judgement, pressure or unnecessary barriers.

Family fun means everyone can join in

Our SEND Events aren't just for the individual with additional needs.

Families, siblings and carers are all welcome to take part together. This means the whole family can enjoy their time at Out of Bounds rather than one person having to sit out while everyone else participates.

There are also multiple check-in points, no requirement to wear a wristband and a friendly, supportive team available if anyone needs help or guidance.

What can you do during a SEND Event?

Our SEND Events currently offer a range of activities, including:

🎳 Ten Pin Bowling – with different ball weights available and wheelchair accessibility.
⛳ Adventure Golf – our 18-hole safari-themed course, which is wheelchair accessible.
🧗 Clip ’N Climb – a range of climbing challenges with staff support.
🛝 Soft Play – active exploration and movement.
🕸️ Adventure Nets – a multi-level net adventure.
☁️ Jumping Pillows – outdoor space to jump, move and have fun.

Activity availability can vary, and some activities have their own age, height, supervision or safety requirements, so we recommend checking the latest event information before your visit.

You can take your time

A SEND Event doesn't have to mean rushing from one activity to the next.

You can pause. You can take a break. You can change your mind.

If things become overwhelming, quieter spaces are available, and our team is there to help. The aim isn't to complete every activity — it's to have a positive experience.

Our Time-Out Café can also provide a place to pause between activities, with hot and cold drinks, food, snacks, ice creams, fruit smoothies and more.

Helping families feel prepared

We know that visiting somewhere new can sometimes feel daunting, particularly when predictability is important.

That's why families are encouraged to bring anything that helps them feel comfortable, such as ear defenders, familiar items, sensory aids, communication cards or a drink.

Out of Bounds also has an open-plan, single-level layout, automated entrance doors, accessible routes, disabled parking bays and accessible toilets.

More than just an activity session

For us, SEND Events aren't simply about making a few changes to an ordinary session.

They're about creating an environment where families feel comfortable, understood and able to enjoy time together.

The feedback we've received from families shows us just how valuable that can be — whether it's giving a child the confidence to try an activity they love, allowing siblings to enjoy the day together, or simply making a family outing feel possible.

We know that SEND covers a very wide range of needs, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. That's why we want to continue listening to families, learning from their experiences and finding ways to make Out of Bounds as welcoming and accessible as possible.
